Ensure Clean Water with Portawell’s Filtration System

Welcome to Portawell Filter’s page, where we’re dedicated to providing you with emergency water filtration products to ensure you have access to clean and safe drinking water for emergencies or off grid adventures.  PortaWell does not manufacture any water filters; instead, we manufacture an appliance (PortaWell and PortaWell mini) that accepts commercially available standard sized filters that can be tailored to remove/reduce a variety of water contaminant types including:

  • Sediment (sand, silt, clay, organic debris)
  • Bacteria (E coli, salmonella, cholera)
  • Cysts (giardia, cryptosporidium)
  • Helminths (worms, flukes)
  • Inorganic chemicals (chlorine, chloramine, fluoride, nitrates, nitrites, silver, barium, hydrogen sulfide, radon, selenium, mercury, lead, chromium, arsenic, heavy metals
  • Organic Chemicals (herbicides, glyphosate, pharmaceutical compounds, VOCs, toxins.

The Importance of Water Filtration

Water from various surface sources may contain contaminants, including sediment, bacteria, viruses, and chemicals. Consequently, these impurities can affect its taste, odor, and safety for consumption. Filtration is the most effective and efficient method for treating a suspect water source to make it safe for drinking. The advantages of filtration are:

  • Filters available to reduce/remove particulate, biologics and chemicals
  • Filters can improve the taste and smell of water
  • Lightweight and portable
  • Easy to setup
  • Proven technology
  • Cost effective

PortaWell is compatible with multiple filter options

PortaWell does not require the use of proprietary filters which can only be purchased from us.  PortaWell is designed to accept standard sized 2 to 2 ½ inch by 10-inch OBE (open both ends) filters that are manufactured by many large companies both in the US and internationally. Because of this standard sized form factor, PortaWell compatible filters are available at a lower cost to the consumer, available from multiple sources (both online and locally), can incorporate the latest technology advances in water filtration, and offer a wide range of options for the reduction/removal of specific waterborne contaminants.

Advanced Filtration Technology

For your convenience and through our research, PortaWell stocks multiple filter types that are compatible with PortaWell.  These filters are from reputable manufacturers who meet rigorous quality standards.   These same filters are also available from other sources; however, you will find our prices are competitive with many online stores and less expensive than most.

Understanding Filter Life and Replacement

One of the key aspects of maintaining an effective water filtration system is understanding filter life and replacement. Over time, filters become saturated with contaminants, leading to plugging of the filter or reduced effectiveness in removing impurities from water. At Portawell, we offer replacement water filters. This ensures that you have clean water with optimal filtration performance.

Prolonging Filter Life

One often asked question is “how long will this filter last?” The most important thing you can do to prolong filter life is to choose your water source carefully.  Filters that may have a lifespan of thousands of gallons when filtering clean tap water may only last for a few tens of gallons if the source water is full sediment and or organic debris (algae).

Sequencing of treatment is important to making water safe to drink and extending filter life

To prolong filter life and make water from a lake or pond safe to drink, it’s important to follow a filtration and purification sequence based on the water source.  This may include:

  • Pretreatment including flocculation/sedimentation to remove most of the dirt by allowing these particles to settle to the bottom of a container.
  • Filter with Sediment filter to reduce/remove remaining sand, silt, clay and organic debris.
  • Microfilter with Ceramic or NanoCeram® to reduce/remove cysts, bacteria and helminths.
  • Chemical filtration with activated Carbon or AquaMetix® to reduce chemicals, pesticides and improve taste and odor (optional but beneficial).
  • Disinfection (chlorination) to kill or inactivate viruses if viral contamination is suspected
For your long term and emergency water filtration needs, the PortaWell® Starter Pak is a two stage, 10-inch system that comes with the following:     The PortaWell® Starter Pak ships in a 5 gallon bucket
